Contemporary vellum (spine with handwritten title, ties missing, upper joint chracked, somewhat stained and worn).
Rare first edition. – IA 107.302. Adams M 1630. Fürst II, 389. Palau 16496. Röhricht 202, 751. – Benedictus Arias Montanus (Benito Arias Montano, 1527-1598) is regarded as one of the most important theologians and biblical exegetes during the reign of Philipp II., King of Spain, for whom he wrote several books. Montanus was an orientalist and had a remarkable knowledge of several oriental languages. By his participation at the council of Trento 1562 he earned much respect and recognition. From 1569-72 he worked – together with others – at a new multilingual edition of the Bible known as ‚Antwerp Polyglot Bible‘ which was published in eight volumes. By participating in this project he came in conflict with the Inquisition.
Our work was created in connection with this extensive Bible project and it deals in nine parts with the Holy Land, its geography, the twelve tribes of Isreal, Jerusalem, the Temple and the ritual institutions of the ancient Jews. In the last book there is a chronology of the world from the very beginning.
The map of the world is from the ‚Antwerp Polyglot Bible‘ (here in a second state, of 3, with the word ‚gentes‘ added in the lower left panel, for the first state see No 4 and Fig.) and shows the dissemination of the jewish tribes. Interestingly enough there is an island in the position of Australia (Shirley 125). Etched outline sketches, plans, and views show the Temple of Salomon as a symmetrically built town of God. This ideal construction we find also at the Spanish royal palace and monastery ‚El Escorial‘ built under King Philip II of Spain. On all plates are red types with the characters A-Q. Most of the plates with very good impressions, printed regularly, and with just a few tiny tears, partly restored.
Front-page with an ownership inscription by Reverend Henry White from Lichfield (1813) and a lithographic bookplate ‚Rev. W. Martin‘. Some smaller restorations, several pencil underlinings, paper nearly not spotted or brownish, at all a very nice item.
